Scholarships for Class of 2018 Exceed $86 Million

Milwaukee Public Schools announced Thursday another record-breaking amount of scholarship dollars earned by students. The Class of 2018 received an eye-popping total of $86,247,467* in scholarship offers, shattering last year's record of $64 million. This is the sixth straight year, dating back to 2012 ($18 million total), that scholarship offers have increased. This year's class saw nearly 900 students receiving scholarships; that number has increased by more than 200 since 2015.

Do you believe in the power of financial literacy? There are a number of opportunities available with SecureFutures, formerly Make A Difference - Wisconsin. This program brings hundreds of volunteers into high school classrooms to lead proven Money Sense lessons on financial basics. Since 2006, programs have led to life-changing behaviors for 62,000 teens at more than 200 high schools and community sites. SecureFutures is looking for MPS alumni volunteers!

3rd Annual Alumni Reunion was a Success!

Dozens of alumni gathered at the Tripoli Shrine Center on Friday, May 11 with exciemtent, eager to be at the 3rd Annual MPS Alumni Reunion! Several schools were represented and the classes of 1938-2017 were represented as well. Guests were able to see former classmates and colleagues; we started the party with a surprise performance by the Riverside Alumni Drumline.

A trip down memory lane for alumni

A group of Milwaukee Public Schools Alumni recently toured their former stomping grounds. The group -- former students from Grantosa, John Muir (now Carment Northwest), and Custer High School (Now Obama School of Career And Technical Education) -- visited classrooms where they remembered learning how to build bird houses, had home economics, watched movies for five cents and learned of JFK’s assassination.

Nine individuals were honored in the inaugural Alumni Awards Dinner hosted by the MPS Foundation on August 25, 2017. The awards ceremony took place at Milwaukee’s Italian Community Center and honored MPS alumni in seven categories: Start, Stay, Succeed Champion Award: Michael Harris, principal, and Nathaniel Deans, teacher, Riverside University High School (Riverside High School Alumni) Outstanding Alumni Award: Patricia Contreras, Director-Global Community Relations and Contributions, Rockwell Automation (Milwaukee Tech High School Alumna) Young Alumni Award: Keith Stanley, Executive Director, Near West Side Partners (Rufus King High School Alumnus) Service Award: Jackie Herd-Barber, Community Volunteer Extraordinaire (Custer High School Alumna) Corporate Partner Award: William “Bill” Berezowitz, Vice President and General Manager, GE Healthcare (Bay View High School Alumnus) Honorary Alumni Award: Joe and Jennifer Bartolotta, Bartolotta Restaurant Group Lifetime Achievement Award: Allan “Bud” Selig, Commissioner Emeritus, Major League Baseball (Washington High School Alumnus) The event also served as a kick-off to the Foundation’s annual giving campaign, which raises funds to support high-quality programming for MPS students at all grade levels, provide resources for district projects and special educational events, and award more than $60,000 in college scholarships to MPS graduates each year.
