A trip down memory lane for alumni

A group of Milwaukee Public Schools Alumni recently toured their former stomping grounds. The group -- former students from Grantosa, John Muir (now Carment Northwest), and Custer High School (Now Obama School of Career And Technical Education) -- visited classrooms where they remembered learning how to build bird houses, had home economics, watched movies for five cents and learned of JFK’s assassination.

Nine individuals were honored in the inaugural Alumni Awards Dinner hosted by the MPS Foundation on August 25, 2017. The awards ceremony took place at Milwaukee’s Italian Community Center and honored MPS alumni in seven categories: Start, Stay, Succeed Champion Award: Michael Harris, principal, and Nathaniel Deans, teacher, Riverside University High School (Riverside High School Alumni) Outstanding Alumni Award: Patricia Contreras, Director-Global Community Relations and Contributions, Rockwell Automation (Milwaukee Tech High School Alumna) Young Alumni Award: Keith Stanley, Executive Director, Near West Side Partners (Rufus King High School Alumnus) Service Award: Jackie Herd-Barber, Community Volunteer Extraordinaire (Custer High School Alumna) Corporate Partner Award: William “Bill” Berezowitz, Vice President and General Manager, GE Healthcare (Bay View High School Alumnus) Honorary Alumni Award: Joe and Jennifer Bartolotta, Bartolotta Restaurant Group Lifetime Achievement Award: Allan “Bud” Selig, Commissioner Emeritus, Major League Baseball (Washington High School Alumnus) The event also served as a kick-off to the Foundation’s annual giving campaign, which raises funds to support high-quality programming for MPS students at all grade levels, provide resources for district projects and special educational events, and award more than $60,000 in college scholarships to MPS graduates each year.

Graduates of all MPS schools are invited to reconnect with classmates and find out what's new in the MPS district. The weekend-long celebration will include the 10th Annual Run Back to School, Alumni Dinner, picnic and gatherings.

Milwaukee Public Schools alumni are a key part of our community’s success, and the Milwaukee Public Schools Foundation is bringing together alumni, friends, and supporters to recognize and honor their achievements. On Friday, August 25th, the MPS Foundation will host the first-ever Alumni Awards Dinner, which will celebrate the accomplishments of nine outstanding MPS alumni. On the 23rd floor of the Pfister Hotel, overlooking one of the best views in the city of Milwaukee, alumni from various Milwaukee Public Schools gathered for the second installment of the MPS Alumni “After School” Networking Series on February 28, 2017. This series aims to connect MPS alumni across all generations and professions in order to build individual networks, forward careers and connect our MPS “Forever Family” to the work being done in MPS.
MPS alumnus Al Jarreau is remembered by students and staff

Seven-time Grammy winner and Milwaukee Public Schools alumnus Al Jarreau was in Milwaukee in October 2016 to accept the Lifetime Achievement Award in Music from the Wisconsin Foundation for School Music. He took time to visit with students and listen to their performances at Milwaukee High School of the Arts (MHSA) and Lincoln Center of the Arts (LCA) while in town.
Alumni After School event brings alumni together to discuss careers

More than 50 Milwaukee Public Schools alumni gathered on November 22, 2016 at Motor Bar & Restaurant inside the Harley-Davidson Museum for the launch of the MPS Alumni After-School Networking Series. Alumni in attendance included MPS School Board President Mark Sain, Wisconsin Senator-elect LaTonya Johnson, State Representative David Bowen, State Representative Jonathan Brostoff and County Supervisor Sequanna Taylor. MPS alumni spent the evening networking and enjoying good food and good company.
