Year-round, first responders’ brave challenges so the rest of us may stay safe. In honor of their hard work and dedication, MPS Alumni would like to honor and celebrate these heroes for selflessly protecting and serving our communities. We honor the courage, commitment, and sacrifices of those in the fire service, law enforcement, and emergency medical services (EMS) communities, as well as our nation’s public servants. Join us in celebrating the Alumni “heroes among us” during these crucial times in our lives.

Rebels Community Organization is proud to share the story of Damon Shoates, a true Hero Among Us. Since graduating from MPS’ Milwaukee Tech High School in 1986 Damon has dedicated his life to helping others. Damon joined the army to serve his country after high school where he was stationed at Fort Hamilton. For the past 22 years, however, Damon has inspired and uplifted Milwaukee young people through his work as a professional mentor at Running Rebels Community Organization. At Running Rebels Damon specialized in working with youth involved in the juvenile justice system for 15 years before moving the Violence Free Zone, a preventative in-school mentoring program. He is now Running Rebels’ Violence Free Zone site supervisor at MPS’ Barack Obama School of Career and Technical Education, where he provides mentoring, case management, and mediations for MPS students. Damon has risen to the challenges of the pandemic, ensuring that his mentees stay socially connected and emotionally & academically supported as they navigate this difficult phase in their lives. He believes in the power of arts programming for young people to express themselves and has spent countless hours creating COVID safe arts programming for Rebel young people. Damon Shoates’ dedication, humility, and compassion is a true asset to the MPS and Milwaukee community.
