Milwaukee Public Schools is mourning the passing of former U.S. Senator Herb Kohl, an MPS alumnus and advocate for education whose philanthropy directly benefited MPS students and educators.   Kohl died Wednesday after a brief illness, according to reports. He was 88.  “The passing of Senator Kohl is a true loss to the entire state of Wisconsin, but especially here in the MPS community,” said MPS Superintendent Dr.

Gaulien "Gee" Smith North Division High School - Blue-Devils   I live by ‘To whom much is given, much is required.’   Gaulien "Gee" Smith is the founder and owner of Gee's Clippers, a Milwaukee barbershop, and Gee's MKE Wellness Clinic, both making huge strides in the community.  Gee's Clippers opened on June 1, 1995. The barbershop has created community partnerships with the Milwaukee Bucks and numerous other large companies in the Milwaukee area.

On November 4, 2022, the Washington High School Alumni Scholarship Foundation proudly recognized twelve men and women who are being added to the school’s Hall of Fame. All were selected for exemplary careers and service to the community. The alumni association hosted a ceremony in the Washington High School library for honorees and their guests. Each honoree was presented with a framed memento bearing their photo and personal biography.

David Bowen is currently a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly but may have his ‘eye on the prize’ as the future Lieutenant Governor. When asked if Milwaukee Public Schools had an impact on his growth and development, David replied that he had ‘amazing educational experiences’ that began at elementary school. While in high school, David joined a youth development program that was aimed at high school students from across the district.

Congratulations to MPS alumni Kevon Looney and Jordan Poole! Both went on to play for the Golden State Warriors and are now NBA champions. Golden State defeated the Boston Celtics on June 16, winning four of six games. Looney, a 2014 graduate of Alexander Hamilton High School, is racking up his third NBA championship. For Poole, who attended Rufus King High School before moving to Indiana and graduating in 2017, the win marks his first championship.

Following in the footsteps of Acting Mayor Marvin Pratt, Cavalier Johnson became the second Black mayor and first elected Black mayor of Milwaukee in April 2022. Johnson won a special election on April 5 and was sworn into office on April 13, 2022. Milwaukee Public Schools is celebrating Mayor Johnson! A lifetime resident of Milwaukee, Johnson graduated from Bay View High School in 2005 and received a bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Milwaukee High School of the Arts, Class of 2017 - Sam Guyton on a roll as he completes his senior year at the prestigious NYU. “I feel that I have been blessed from God to be a messenger of love and entertainment. I want to be that voice musically that gets someone through their day and inspires other creatives to create.” Guyton started as a young kid in Milwaukee who grew up in a musical household but wanted to kick around a soccer ball.

Morgan Coleman is an alumna from Rufus King International High School, Class of 2018. Morgan attends Drake University and is currently majoring in International Relations, with minors in both Spanish and Arabic. Morgan was a debater throughout her high school career and was quickly immersed into the discussion of foreign and domestic issues that plague our society. Instead of just debating these issues, she decided to promote solutions to remedy them as her high school environment created a platform for her to get started.

MPS welcomed back one of its own this week for an inspirational session with students at Lynde and Harry Bradley Technology and Trade School. Chris Gardner, a 1971 graduate of MPS Washington High School, is an entrepreneur, best-selling author, philanthropist, and subject of the book and film “The Pursuit of Happyness.” Gardner spent time with about 100 students in the school library.
