As part of MPS's ongoing work to monitor student safety, the district will offer two lead-screening clinics for students in July. This testing will show whether children have elevated levels of lead in their bloodstream.
The free clinics are open to all Milwaukee Public Schools students, and appointments are not needed. District families can visit the location most convenient for them:
- North Division High School, at 1011 W. Center St., on Wednesday, July 23, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
- South Division High School, at 1515 W. Lapham Blvd., on Tuesday, July 29, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Novir will conduct the screenings at both locations. The consent of a parent or legal guardian is needed to test children; consent forms will be available at the clinics.
Lead screening is done through a finger prick. A health care provider then collects a few drops of blood to be used for the test. Test results will be shared with families when completed.
The Milwaukee Health Department recommends that all children be tested for lead. Elevated levels of lead can lead to health issues in young children. This test will let you know whether your child’s lead exposure falls within acceptable ranges or whether monitoring or treatment is needed.
