Students and families were welcomed by Superintendent Dr. Keith P. Posley, Milwaukee Board of School Directors President Bob Peterson, Vice President Sequanna Taylor, Director Marcela Garcia, Director Gilly Gokalgandhi, Director Henry Leonard, Director Megan O’Halloran, County Executive David Crowley, Mayor Cavalier Johnson, Sheriff Earnell Lucas, Police Chief Jeffrey Norman, State Representative Jonathan Brostoff, Milwaukee Teachers Education Association President Amy Mizialko, Administrators & Supervisors Council Executive Director Steven Lubar, City Year Senior Vice President/Executive Director Dr. Stephanie Maney-Hartlaub, district administrators, and others. MPS early start schools across the city, including all high schools, grade 6–8 middle schools, and specific elementary schools, all went back to class on August 15, 2022. Traditional start elementary schools will return to school on Tuesday, September 6.

Principal Larry Farris welcomed guests and families at the Day One kickoff. Dr. Posley and Bob Peterson expressed enthusiasm for being back in classrooms for academic learning and mental wellness. They also shared that high attendance will be a focus for the 2022–23 school year.

“We are ready for an excellent school year,” said Dr. Posley. “Our teams have been working hard to prepare buildings, classrooms, curriculum, and activities to maximize learning and really help students engage academically. This is an exciting time for the district.”

Because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) currently ranks Milwaukee County in the high transmission category for COVID-19, students and staff will continue wearing masks until the county drops into the medium or low transmission category. The district is maintaining COVID-19 mitigation measures including electronic HEPA filtration units throughout buildings, hand sanitizing stations, and frequent hand washing.

Milwaukee High School of the Arts (MHSA) offers an intensive arts education along with Advanced Placement (AP) courses, engineering, and bilingual education. MHSA is located at 2300 W. Highland Ave., Milwaukee, 53233.
