MPS seniors earn $107,000,000 for college

MPS seniors earn $107,000,000 for collegeMilwaukee Public Schools gathered students, staff, and media in front of the Central Services building on June 22 to announce a record-breaking number of scholarship and grant dollars earned by seniors this year—a total of $107,000,000. This is the fourth straight year that scholarship and grant offers have increased. In 2021, MPS students raised $96 million for college, which was an $11 million jump from the previous year.

In addition to unveiling the total amount of scholarships and grants awarded, students from the Class of 2022 shared their thoughts about what these dollars mean for their futures and which colleges and majors they have selected. MPS Superintendent Dr. Keith P. Posley and other district leaders offered their thoughts about the growing number of ways the district helps students prepare for college and success.

"I want to extend my congratulations to the class of 2022 on setting a new record in scholarship and grant money raised and for setting a new standard in achievement for all our students," MPS Superintendent Dr. Keith P. Posley said. "This was able to happen with great support from our families, teachers, counselors, staff, and district partners. The collective effort culminating in this accomplishment by our young people truly makes me MPS proud."

MPS offers College & Career Centers in 20 MPS high schools. These centers were opened in 2017 as a free resource for students in grades 6–12 and are an essential component in helping students apply to college and acquire scholarships. With the passing of the referendum in 2020 that added millions of dollars to the district budget, MPS has added 22 school counselors to help increase attendance and social emotional well being, as well as promote success in student behavior, graduation, and advancing college and career readiness after high school.

Four MPS College & Career Centers will be open and available this summer for students. Visit the MPS College & Career webpage for more information.
