National School Lunch Week celebrates student nutrition

National School Lunch WeekDuring National School Lunch Week, MPS celebrates the staff in the Department of School Nutrition. Our heroes of the cafeteria are responsible for planning, preparing, and distributing breakfast and lunch to students and staff every day. Since March, in response to the pandemic, the nutrition team has offered meals for families to pick up. The team provides meals every school day at more than 50 Stop, Grab, and Go sites.

When schools are open, every student in MPS receives free breakfast and lunch every school day to support healthy growth and learning. Nutritious meals ensure that all students are ready to learn, and school meal programs additionally support families, who gain peace of mind that their children’s meals will be available at no cost.

Across Wisconsin, more than 485,000 school lunches are served every day when schools are open, with more than 55,000 lunches served daily in MPS. Federal guidelines and school nutritionists ensure that children receive balanced, healthy meals.

Families are reminded that they can pick up a packaged breakfast and lunch for children daily from 11:00 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. at more than 50 Stop, Grab, and Go sites. In addition, each Thursday in October, families can receive a free bag of fresh fruits and vegetables. Offered through the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, each week is built on a theme that includes recipes and nutrition information. Learn more about free fresh produce offered in October.

MPS extends a huge thank you to all our 750 nutrition staff who work hard every day to feed our young learners, and who have risen to the challenge of feeding students during the pandemic. Thank you!
