Grant Gordon was a trailblazing educator and the first African American principal in Milwaukee. The learning center named in his honor will host a celebration to share his legacy on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. The public is invited to hear his story, learn about programs in the Grant Gordon Learning Center, tour Head Start classrooms, and enjoy refreshments.
Formerly the Lee Learning Center, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors voted to change the name to the Grant Gordon Learning Center in 2019. Gordon was an army veteran who served in World War II and took part in the Normandy landing on D-Day. He went on to serve for 35 years in MPS as a teacher, principal of Garfield High School, and general assistant to the superintendent until his retirement.
Families interested in the MPS Head Start program can receive information during the event. Neighbors and the community are invited to help celebrate!
The Grant Gordon Learning Center is located at 921 W. Meinecke Ave., Milwaukee, WI, 53206.
